Gum or periodontal disease is the main reason people need periodontal treatment. Gum (or periodontal) disease is a chronic bacterial infection of the soft tissue and bone that supports the teeth. The disease can cause tissue and bone to be destroyed, and can lead to eventual tooth loss.
Some signs of periodontal disease may include red, swollen, or bleeding gums; persistent bad breath; teeth that are loose or separating.
Certain bacteria in your mouth forms plaque (the sticky, colorless deposits that is constantly forming on your teeth). If teeth aren’t cleaned adequately, this plaque may harden and becomes known as tartar. Tartar can only be removed by a dentist.
The main goals of periodontal treatment are to:
- Eliminate the plaque and tartar that cause gum disease
- Control the inflammatory process that is responsible for destruction of the tissues anchoring the teeth to the jawbones
- Create a healthy periodontal environment that is easy for you and your dental professional to maintain
Treatment will depend on the type of periodontal disease and how far the condition has progressed. It may range from a thorough cleaning to gum surgery.
During your routine check up, Dr. Saroyan will determine the health of your gums.
